It was closer to two hours before Adros appeared at the old oak. Brendan glared at him, and Adros stumbled back. “S-sorry. I had to sneak food from the kitchen.”

Brendan counted to ten internally before smiling. “No problem. I appreciate it.”

Adros hesitated for only a second before handing Brendan the pack. “Um, it’s ham. I got some of the gravy you like, too.”

Brendan grabbed the pack and quickly dove into the food. He was starving. He’d barely eaten anything since he’d left New City.

He sat back when he was done, the edge taken off the hunger, but it was still there, reminding him why he needed to do this. Not that he needed much of a reminder. He licked the tin that had held the gravy clean.

Adros had stood silently the whole time Brendan ate, shifting from foot to foot. He glanced back in the direction of the camp. “So, I should get going.”

“Not yet.” Brendan placed the pack down and pulled his knife from the sheath at his waist and started cleaning his fingernails. “There’s something we need to discuss first.”

“Um, okay.”

Brendan looked up from his nails. “I need you to get Lyla banished from the camp.”

Adros’s mouth dropped. “What? No, I’m not doing that. I couldn’t do that.” He slammed his mouth shut, glaring. “You haven’t changed, have you? I don’t know why I thought— You know, it doesn’t matter. Goodbye, Dad.” He turned to head back to the camp.

Brendan narrowed his eyes. “If you don’t, your sisters are dead.”

Adros stopped walking, his whole body tensing. He faced Brendan. “What did you say?”

“Get Lyla banished or your sisters are dead.”

“You can’t touch them. They’re safe inside the camp.”

“I can’t touch them. That’s true. But what about the Unwelcome? I don’t think your Phoenixes will be able to stand up to them.”

“They’ve come to camp before. And they’ve never—”

“But those times they didn’t know where the cave was.”

Brendan let the words lie between them. And he watched his son’s face fill with anger as he stepped forward and pulled his staff. “Then I guess I need to make sure you can’t talk to anyone.”

Brendan held his knife in front of him. “I already have. And unless you get Lyla out of that camp, the Unwelcome will know where to find all of you.”

Indecision warred across Adros’s face, and Brendan knew he was trying to find the lie in Brendan’s word. But he’d never find it, because there was no lie.

Adros lowered his staff. “Why? Why would do this?”

“Because that bitch deserves everything that is coming to her.”

Adros shook his head. “What? You’re going to try and kill her? She’ll kill you before you can even raise your arm.”

Brendan narrowed his eyes. “Oh, she’ll get what’s coming to her. Don’t you worry about that.”

Adros stared at him, his gaze hard. “How am I going to get her kicked out? It’s Lyla.”

“The same way she got me kicked out.”

“Violence? Lyla’s never laid a hand against anyone in camp except during training.”

“No, she beat you—repeatedly.
